I know I’m old when…

I know I am old when…
1) While filling in any application (even a darn credit card), I have to scroll, and scroll, and scroll a couple of pages down, to reach my ‘Year’ of birth!!! I mean, seriously, it wasn’t that long since I was born, was it?

2) I watch the Idols of our teenage years (SRK or Juhi Chawla) on screen, and realise they have considerably aged!!! So if a young and vivacious’Ghoonghat Ki Aad Se’ Juhi is a comical-looking old woman now, that makes me.. er.. Ok, let’s skip!

3) My kid asks me, ‘Mummy, which is bigger? 4 or 33?’ I reply, with a smile, ’33’. He laughs happily. When I suddenly realise, the ’33’ he is referring to, is … me!!

4) An Alumni meet is planned, and we realise it has been TEN YEARS since we left college! How could T-E-N years have whooshed by??! 🙄 I mean, I don’t know what happened in this decade!

5) For the first 5 years of my career (or say, all 5 years of my career), people who used to report to me were double my age! I used to feel sorry for them. I suddenly realise, in a few years, I will be one of them!!!
6) All the ‘kids’ in the apartment block that my parents live in, greet me with a cheery ‘Hi AUNTY!’. I have gotten quite used to that one. But the next lines are what shock me out of my wits. I ask them ‘How is college?’ and they guffaw and reply ‘Whaaat Aunty! I have been working for 4 years now!’

7) I meet my parents every 6 months or sometimes, more frequently than that. And every time I see them, they seem more ‘sober’ and ‘quieter’ (considering that we are a strange family, in the sense that none of us acts appropriate to our age!!!)

8) I log into Skype to chat with an old friend, and we realise, that it has been 9 years since we saw each other!!! I mean, NINE years is a long, long time.
9) I read this lovely post on ‘decision making’ and the start of a promising career!! I realise I have come a long, long way. I mean, not that I have a career, but it has been a couple of centuries since I was at that juncture of ‘opening my first bank account’ 🙂

10) When you lovely readers read this post, and send me loving ‘Awwws..’ and kind ‘Hugs’, then I’ll feel like a total piece of crap. Aged crap!!

And on that cheerful note , I wish you all a very happy week ahead!! Live life to the fullest folks. You just don’t realise how Time flies. And very soon, you might be writing a post like this yourselves!!!!

LOL!!! I am also out of college for 4 years only… may I???? LOL!!! 🙂 🙂

time just flies… couldn’t believe its been 4 years since I have left college 😦 😦

Hope you had a great weekend Pals….

Time flies, doesn’t it? For a long time I used to be the youngest one at the workplace…now there is someone a couple of years younger than I am in the same department and another one who is 6 years younger than me in the next department! Then again, I’ve always felt like I was older than people I worked with and my own group of friends…I’ve said it before and will say it again — I’m 27 going on 37. 🙂
He he he, I’m always 20 in my mind 😉 Just that other people don’t seem to realise it 🙂 Someone 6 years younger is still OK, PB. At the time I quit my job, I had two kids who were just 19 in my department!!!!
Hmm…you grew up with SRK and Aamir and Juhi as idols…similar time I guess…although some of them (read: Aamir and SRK) are still playing college grad roles, aren’t they? [Not that I’ve been in touch with Bollywood!]
Yes I did, and you too? I don’t understand how they can play college roles… and I really wish they would stop! But then when a 60-yr-old RAjini can play a young scientist, I suppose SRK and Aamir have a decade of acting left 😉 😉 And on that note, please don’t avoid Bollywood, there’s a lot of comedy in there to keep one entertained 🙂
The way I know I’m getting chronologically older by the way is this — when I was growing up, all the cricketers I loved (read: Aussie cricketers) were at least 13 to 20 years older than me and now, most of the players are younger than me and our current captain is only 3 years older than me! That’s how I know I’m getting older! 😛
LOL! I can imagine that!! When I started watching cricket, Shoaib Akhtar was a teenager with smart looks and golder hair. Today he’s a middle-aged uncle! I’m telling you, these people are all getting old 😉 Btw, how old are you, PB? 🙂

I will be joining your league in a few years. I find it hard to believe that the person all the kids are calling ‘aunty’ is me!
A few years only no? That’s a long time. Enjoy your ‘youth’ 🙂 and Yes, Chinkurli, I still don’t respond to ‘aunty’ sometimes and then I realise its me they are calling after 🙄 🙄 Useless teenagers!

🙂
(That was a substitute for the Aww which the post got out of me!) 😉
Awwww (Couldn’t resist that ;-))

Here are some counter points:

(a) You still love ice cream, i hope? 🙂
Oh yes, on a hot Friday afternoon 🙂
(b) When you help your kid in drawing, do you get so engrossed that you stick your tongue out while drawing? 🙂
He he he, that is so cute!! I pout 🙂
(c) When you meet your parents every 6 months, do you cook or enjoy your Mom’s finger-licking good food? 🙂
Cook at mum’s place? Kabhi Nahin!!!
On that note, have a super week! 🙂
Thanks, TOSL, I’m feeling younger already 🙂 Bless you, dear!

HEy I am here for the first time..Nice blog..I am also in the same boat..
He he, thank you Subhasree. Same pinch, no back pinch 🙂

Hi Pallavi – Is this the new one or the old one? Hope everything got sorted out.
Thank you SO much Corinne, for your concern both on FB and here. This is my good old blog, WP restored it immediately! Very impressed by their work.

When I visit someone’s blog where the author laments that she is old at TEN years out of college I realise that I am not old, but an archeological sample.
Sigh !
LOL! Sorry Lakshmi. However, that made me feel young 😉 He he he! *ducks to avoid rotten tomatoes from your kitchen*

hehe Pal , no aaws and hugs from me 😀 😀 we are in the same boat . And young at heart whatever the year says 😀
He he, thank u dear!
I always say I have a tough time calculating my age . But now after reading your post I realise I stopped counting when I passed 16 .
LOL! What a brill idea! I should do that too. Except the little one finds it very interesting to keep asking me my age every couple of days .. grrrrrrrr… 🙄
On another note , today I was thinking of SRK and how his movies have influenced all of us and also how aged he is now.
Seriously!!! HE looks so old. And coming to think of it, we (aam aadmi) hasn’t aged as much as he has 😉 😉 *smirks and runs before chappals are thrown!*

Ha ha ha….I so loved your post! 🙂
I’m sure you will be one of those people who will age gracefull! 😀
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww thank you for that, Ash! I didn’t want any ‘awws’ on this post, and you made me write the biggest ‘awwwwwwwww’, girl! 🙂

Totally agree with what Ash said about you in terms of ageing gracefully :). Superb post, PalluKUTTY 😛
Awww thank u darling!

Aunty! That dreaded word. Some day I’ll make peace with it, I hope. For now, I’m just going to train my friends kids to call me by name or ‘maasi’ or something.
You’re so right, Ramya! When my nephew calls me ‘chitti’ I feel quite happy about it, but when my other niece/nephew call me ‘Aunty’ I feel …never mind!

I soo agree with Ramya above me – my husband’s nieces calling me chitthi or periamma is so much more better than ‘aunty’, I dont know why 😛
He he he, good idea, Urmi.
On that note, Age is all in the mind ya – not just the digits on a piece of paper. Women are like wine, we get better with age 😉 So embrace it ya Pallo!! 😀
Definitely, Urmi, we certainly get better with age 😉 ;-)

Forget your age, Pallavi! Even now, I enjoy singing sheila ki jawaaaani! I like Katrina’s dance too! Everything is in the mind!
Hee hee hee, me too 🙂 🙂 Its all in the mind vonly 😉
My teenage idol was Dharmendra…so many decades back!
LOL! Sorry, I didn’t mean that, but I had to chuckle when I read that. Thank u for bringing a smile to my face, Sandhya!

time is flying past .. everything is jetting past ..
But then I do feel that young and old its in heart .. I dont feel OLD seriously I might Look old , but i am doing more than what i did then..
Absolutely bikki, I don’t feel old either, but I ‘realise’ i am old when I see such things 😉
come june/july trying to do something silly and dangerous and i ma raring to go for it .. will tell later ..
Ooooh sounds like a lot of fun!!!!
so no we are not old , we are Learned 🙂 he he he hehee
Ofcourse, ofcourse 😆

Awwww… 🙂 (Had to do that.. :P)
Nahiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!
I kind of know how my mom feels now, when her colleagues ask her daughter’s age and she pauses for a few milli-seconds and says ‘Twenty’. Now I know why that pause happens.. 😛
Hee hee!!! I can completely understand that!!!
Anyway, Lovely post Writerzblock. 🙂
Really enjoyed reading it.. 🙂
Thank you so much, little girl 🙂 (If I can take the liberty of calling you that.. it just makes me feel happy 🙂

The first half of 30’s could intimidate us and hopefully the second half of 30 should be more assuring 😉
He he!! I think we grow more confident and sure of ourselves during the second half of the 30s 🙂 Let’s see. Time will tell 😉
P.S> Am also witnessing all those symptoms and shocks you are currently experiencing 😛 😀
Aww, nice to hear that 😉 (In a very non-sadistic way!)

Ok I will cut out the aww and the hug I was planning to send across. 😀
LOL, thank you for the non-awwws and the non-hugs!!!
But seriously, time does fly! I will take your lesson of living every moment before I am beaten to it by wrinkles and Eastman coloured photographs.
Now that’s the best part of blogging… thank you Debs, you made my day!!!
Wonderful post! 😀
Thanks so much 🙂

Pal, I think I am old enough to give you a hug… {{{{hugs}}}}}
Awww thank u Uma 🙂 But you look like a teenager yourself 😉
All those points are true…but just learn to look beyond all these and see the happiness u got. That’ll make u feel younger. And thats what life’s all about, my dear girl.
Definitely – will do 🙂
While we are always in a hurry to grow up during our young years, we want to put the break after crossing 30 !!!
Ayyo, so true!!!
If time has flown so fast, then you’ve truly enjoyed every minute of it !!! Stay that way, always. 🙂 Hugs.
Time has certainly whizzed by, and I want to grab hold of it, and stop it for sometime!! Thank you for your hugs 🙂 Will collect them in person soon 😉 (Er, in a very straight way, ofcourse!)

How dare you even start a post and sulk about the number 33 when I well… chodo!!:( And talk about adults (ok kids!) just 10-12 yrs younger calling us aunty!! sigh!!! Avoiding writing such posts is therefore a conscious decision:)
He he he 🙂 That was my first and last post on the silly topic of ‘age’ 🙂

I read all your points and go check check check. Now I feel OLD. 😥

Let me sit in my corner and sulk for a bit. 😐
LOL! Please don’t do that, Comfy!!!! Pretty please!!!!

Ah, pshaw! Thirty three is a fantastic age to be.
🙄
Think about it. You’re wiser, smarter, savvier, and more sophisticated than ever before. You can separate talk from substance better than ever. You know how the world works. You now laugh instead of giggle. You’ve had a diverse set of experiences which make you great company at dinner parties. You’re more assured and self-confident than ever, since you now know your own self a lot better. You don’t make rookie mistakes. When you say something, people actually stop, listen and take it seriously.
Er.. ahem.. I’d just nod and keep silent now 😉
At thirty three, you’ve got the best of the young-born-yesterday-twenty-something-whippersnappers beat any day of the week!
Knockout and no contest. 😉
Awwww thank you PT!! That was really nice. I need to FRAME that one 🙂 to bolster my confidence from time to time 🙂

Well hello aunties! 😉

Much love,
A 24 year old 😛
Poda poda punakku!!! (That was from R)
Yeah yeah yeah, we’ll see you 10 years from now (that’s from me ;-))

he he…

I feel the same scrolling for my age…
🙂 Hi-Five!!
And I also get a shock when I see cvs of job applicants born in the late 80s old enough to be doing a real job…
Seriously man!!!!! I was shocked when one of the new recruits in my old office was a 19-year old!!!
But all good aunty! Enjoi 🙂
Danke Unkalllll!!!!!!!!!!!!

People out of college four years ago call you aunty? Which means people older to me call you aunty? That is just stupid! And wrong!
I don’t blame you for crying about your age though. We have people like Revs rubbing it in all the time!
Revs – don’t remind me! We had a delightful chat the other day, and I braved her umpteen attempts to remind me of my age 🙄 🙄

Lol at scrolling down to select year while entering birth date and working for 4 years… 😀
“I used to feel sorry for them. I suddenly realise, in a few years, I will be one of them!!!” – Don’t say that pal… Even I’ am thinking that I would become old in sometime….
Arre Tan, your ‘sometime’ will be another 10 years, girl! So go ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what, its all totally in the mind. And doesnt depend on your shape. Do what you enjoy, dont give a damn as to what others think. Swim, dance, write a book, and the auntification is our culture. Even the bhajiwalla’s indulge in it. Have you ever been called “Ajji” by a bhajiwalla, urging you to buy from him ? I got him talking about the old days, and got him to reduce the price. So dont worry about names people call you. Just totally enjoy ….
Ha ha! What a brilliant idea! I could use that some day 🙂 Thank u, Suranga 🙂 I’m not going to add a ‘ji’ to make you sound senior 🙂 Respect is in the mind 🙂

Before marriage i was the youngest in my office and after marriage too we both were youngest in the family gatherings. But now we both are elder among all and recently a newly married girl called me aunty 😦 😦
Oh no!!!!You should have told her ‘Aunty Mat Kaho Na!’
Its nice to be the ‘youngest’ but also nice to see our nieces and nephews growing up (and we still don’t realise we have grown that much older too ;-))

Hi Pallavi. Was pleasantly surprised to see you at my blog. Thanks for dropping by.
I always enjoy reading your work, Mani, on the GC Cafe. I end up being a lurker, though 🙂
About getting old?Yeah makes me rue that I can count . Wish I couldn’t. Would have felt secure in a false sense of denial 😛
Ha ha ha!!! Sense of denial sounds like the normal state 🙂

Bah! Age doesn’t matter at ALL. Even if you’re catching up with a friend after nine years – it’ll seem like you met them yesterday.
I vehemently disagree! 😀
Hee hee, I agree with you. I don’t feel old most times, but you know, those rare occasions, something like this creeps up and catches you unaware!!! You’re still one of those young yuppie kids. Let me see what you have to say 10 years from now 🙂

Awwwwnty 🙂
You also know you’re old when you begin sentences with ‘In my time…’ or ‘When I was young…’. I use the latter a lot 😐
LOL! So now I know what I should avoid saying 😉

well..there is a psychology behind someone calling Aunty or Uncle…..ie, the person calling you Aunty just trying to console him/herself that he/she is still not that old…..:)
LOL! I hope not, Irfan 🙂
BTW a nice read, 1st time here and genuinely happy to be here 🙂
Aww thank you so much, Irfan, you just made my day 🙂
Regards,
irfan.

i totally agree with the first point. ahh that makes me feel so old.
more than the grey hair its the word Aunty that scares me 😛
Ha ha! I’m hoping I have a decade atleast before the grey hair stage!!!

It does sneak up on you, doesn’t it? In school and college, every year is marked by new textbooks, teachers, experiences, clothes and what not. Once you complete your education and start working, the days all kind of merge together and before you know it, it’s been a decade since you graduated.
You said it so beautifully, TWC!!! And it has been exactly a year since I finished my PG!
BTW, those kids are rude! The only people I called aunty 4 yrs after graduation were people I’d always called aunty. For everyone else, I’d just go, “Hi!” or smile and conveniently omit the aunty part. Didn’t want anyone to feel offended.
He he he, I’m sure they don’t mean it 🙂 And that reminds me I used to call a neighbour ‘uncle’ too, and he was just 5-6 years older and he always used to crib about it. Now his kids call me ‘Aunty’ all the time 🙂 🙂 Talk about retribution!!

I know exactly what you mean — can empathize with every word.
Ah! I know.. I know 🙂
Just saw your last comment on my post the other day — yes, I’m still around! And I’ve decided to participate in the NaBloPoMo this year, so hopefully, you’ll see quite a bit of me! 🙂
That’s excellent, MM. Its been a long time since we saw you in action 🙂

I know what you mean! I’m 19 & am feeling it already, trust me 🙂
No no, please don’t say that, Magali!!!! I’d kill to be 19 again 🙂
Regarding the first one, don’t take it personally. Many online forms start with 1900 so I have to scroll way down to get to 1990
LOL! I’m happy to hear that 🙂
I agree with #2 too. All my childhood idols… sigh!
Seriously! SRK especially looks haggard!!
LOL on the college part. I’m gonna be in my fourth year of college & people ask me how school is. I guess I do look & sounds younger than my age.
Awww lucky you, girl!!!!

I read each point seriously for all the while my mind was busy analyzing, and I think I really feel old after reading this awesome eye-opener 😀 😀
Super liked it!!
Oh no, that was definitely not my intention!! Please don’t feel old 🙂 Pretty please!

aage barho ab, pallness. it’s been three weeks since u posted. time went whooosh. :p:p
‘pallness’ 🙂 He he he!!! I know, time has defo whooshed by! Kya karoon!! I don’t want to write trash (er, assuming I am not currently doing it!!) because I have ‘subscribed readers’ whom I don’t want to spam 🙂
as i was reading this again today, wut u said about reporting to ppl younger than u resonated so strongly cuz i’ve been thinking of that lately. now i wont be going back to work for a good few years and when i do return, i’d be the old fogie. hmm. joys of being a woman.
Oh yes, When I was 23, I had people around 40 years old who reported to me. Then again, when I was around 27 or so, I had a 50-year old reporting to me. Now ofcourse, if and when I go back to work, I would be a near-40-year-old reporting to a 23-year old! That’s life. Roopie, that’s life!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw 😀
~Nooooooooooooooooooo 🙄
But but in growing older aint there a sweetness… a sweetness from the happy memories of days gone by, of a life well lead, of happiness n tears….
Awww that sure sounds romantic and nice 🙂

Hahahahahaha……..
That was quite a funny post, Aunty. 😛 😀
Hey, kiddo, watch your language! Who did you call Aunty?!!! Er, is there time for me to go and edit the post to take my age off the screen!!! 😉
Good thing about looking and sounding older than you are during teenage years is, you got booze without anyone asking questions.
LOL! I bet that was fun!!! But why would you want booze in your teenage? Teenage itself gives a high. What’s the booze for?

You cribbing about scrolling down pages for finding your year of birth in application forms??!!
LOL! I’m getting used to the idea of scrolling, Shail 🙂

:O :O I can’t believe this. Young woman, HOW MANY pages do you think I have to scroll down for the credit card application?? And I am pretty young too, just on the wrong side of fifty! 😉
Oh please!! You don’t look a day older than 30 🙂
